What’s this for?
Phone neck describes the strain of holding the head forward and down for hours a day. The load adds up through the day, and at night it continues if what you sleep on doesn't support the neck's natural curve.

Blame your pillow if you wake up with a stiff neck. When you sleep, your head and neck should be aligned with the rest of your body.

Why are my hands numb when I wake up and how can I treat this? Sleeping in a position that puts pressure on your neck, arm or hand is a common cause of numbness and pins needles sensation that soon resolves after waking up or repositioning, but it isn’t the only possibility.

The shoulders are made up of joints, muscles and tendons that work together so you can lift your arms. When something goes wrong with the joint, muscles or tendons, it can lead to shoulder pain. Up to 70% of people will have shoulder pain at some point, and it becomes more common as you get older. Shoulder pain can also make it hard to sleep.
Questions answered
Common signs are neck and shoulder tension that builds through screen-heavy days, stiffness on waking, headaches at the base of the skull, and a head that drifts forward of your shoulders.
Phone neck isn't a formal diagnosis, and these signs can have other causes. Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms, or pain that keeps getting worse, should be checked by a doctor.

It can — headaches felt at the base of the skull or behind the eyes are often cervicogenic, meaning pain referred from tight muscles at the top of the neck.
If those muscles stay tense through the night because the neck isn't well supported, the headache can be there on waking. See a doctor for any new, severe or sudden headache, one that's different from your usual pattern, or one with fever, weakness, confusion or changes in vision.

Often, yes — people with phone neck commonly describe disturbed sleep, morning headaches, tingling in the hands, low energy, eye strain and upper-back tension.
Some of these are well understood, others less so, and tingling in the hands can have several causes, so it should always be checked by a clinician. We don't claim that posture causes all of them.

Posture habits can change at any age, through consistent movement, awareness, and support — but we don't claim that any product reverses a condition or reshapes the spine.
Research on whether adults can change their neck alignment is limited and mixed, and a straighter cervical curve isn’t necessarily a problem. For persistent neck pain, the best-supported approach is a physiotherapist-guided exercise program.

Morning back stiffness that eases as you move is common and often linked to how you slept — your mattress and sleep position change how the spine is supported for hours.
A very soft mattress lets the shoulders and hips sink; a review of mattress trials found medium-firm mattresses did best for comfort, sleep quality, and spinal alignment. But see a doctor if morning stiffness lasts more than about half an hour and improves with exercise rather than rest — that pattern can point to an inflammatory condition.

They often travel together and reinforce each other: neck tension can refer pain to the head, pain disrupts sleep, poor sleep lowers pain tolerance, and screen posture feeds the whole cycle.
That's why we look at them together rather than as four separate problems. But the same symptoms can have other causes, so this isn't a diagnosis — if symptoms are severe, new or getting worse, see a doctor.

Very common — neck pain is one of the most frequent musculoskeletal complaints worldwide, and many adults now spend several hours a day looking down at screens.
No reliable figure exists for how many people have phone neck specifically, and we won't invent one. More useful than a population average is your own pattern: how many hours you spend on a phone or laptop, and how your head is positioned while you do.
